In this lesson, you will learn how to create a document, format and revise text, compare AI suggestions, add images, and copy or share the result.
Try it: write an invitation to a book club
Pretend you are drafting a friendly invitation that needs a heading, a short introduction, and practical details.
Start from scratch
On the start screen, click the feather icon for Author Mode, or open Author Mode. A New Writing document opens with Type or paste text.... In a project, its Author Mode action creates the document in that project.
Type or paste a rough paragraph into the editor. Alternatively, send:
Write a friendly book-club invitation with a heading, a short introduction, and a bullet list for date, location, and what to bring. Use fictional details. An empty document's first AI draft is inserted automatically; Undo can remove it.
Click directly in the text to fix a word. Changes save automatically. There is no separate title field above the document.
Start from an existing chat
In an ordinary chat, ask:
Draft a book-club invitation in Author Mode.Wait until the editor is ready; its header actions are unavailable while it is being generated.
Continue working there, or click Create document beside Copy to copy the current editor into a dedicated writing chat. The original is kept. If the source belongs to a project, the new document belongs there too.
Format your writing
- Select text to reveal Text formatting. The paragraph menu offers Paragraph, Heading 1, Heading 2, Heading 3, Bullet list, Numbered list, and Quote.
- Apply Bold or Italic to a selected phrase. Use Link, enter an HTTP(S) or mailto address, and press Enter. An empty link field removes the link. Hold Command, Control, or Shift while clicking a link to open it; ordinary clicks let you edit the text.
- Use Undo and Redo in the document header to inspect and reverse your own edits. You can also paste formatted text and images into the editor.
Ask for a focused change
Select the invitation's opening sentence. Selection alone sends nothing. Click Rewrite to request three alternatives, or type a specific request into Describe change..., such as
Make this sentence warmer without making it longer.Review the proposed text and crossed-out original. Use Show alternatives to choose a version, or Write 3 more options for another set. Choose Accept to apply that suggestion or Cancel to keep the original.
Select several paragraphs and request a change to all of them. Reviews can be accepted or cancelled individually. You can keep editing other, unaffected passages while a rewrite runs.
When at least two reviews are ready and none is still working or failed, Accept all and Cancel all act on the current document's pending reviews. Close hides that extra toolbar and leaves individual reviews available. No changes needs only Okay.
Clear the text selection and ask:
Shorten the invitation and add a final reminder to bring the book.Without a selected passage, the request addresses the whole document. A placed cursor is only a location hint; it does not restrict all changes to that point.
Accepted edits can be undone. Rewrites keep the document's language unless you ask for translation. Choose a text model in the model control or keep Auto, which uses the writing default. A selected text passage cannot be rewritten with an image or voice model.
Add sections, references, and pictures
- Use the editor's Add section control to add text or an image at the offered location. Describe what belongs there. You can also ask for a new section through the chat box.
- Attach a harmless reference document or select a skill before requesting a change. In a project, relevant enabled project files can be used too. Wait for attached files to finish processing.
- Paste or drag an image into the editor. Select it and describe a change in the chat box, or choose an image model for image work. To generate an image directly in a writing document, select an image model and ask for one; it goes at your cursor or the end when no cursor is placed. Auto can hand an image request to the default image model.
- Completed image changes save automatically. Undo restores the previous image and Redo restores the replacement. Use Download image on a selected image to keep a copy.
Keep and share the result
- Click Copy in the editor header to copy its current body as Markdown, including formatting and images. Copy below a full chat answer also includes surrounding commentary.
- Reopen the document from your chats to continue. If saving fails, keep it open and use Retry. A version conflict offers Use saved version or Keep my version; choose after checking which text you need.
- Use the chat's Share control when you actually want others with its link to read it. Public chat links are read-only. A shared project provides collaboration through its project access instead. Do not share the practice document unless you intend to.
Temporary-chat editor changes last only for that session. Plugins and Multi-Model Research are unavailable in Author Mode. Usage limits still apply to AI changes.
Check your result
Your invitation contains text you edited, formatting you chose, and changes you reviewed. You can explain the difference between a selected-passage rewrite and a whole-document request, and can copy or reopen the result.
