Models

Auto-selection uses the default model for the task. A manual choice in a chat or a project default can change which model answers.

In this lesson, you will learn how to set default models for tasks, choose a model in a chat, and exclude the providers offered in settings.

Try it: choose how Mono handles writing

Pretend you often ask for short, clear emails and prefer a particular available model for writing.

  1. Open the Settings gear menu at the top and choose Models. Under Auto-selection, find the writing section and note its selected model.

  2. Click the model selection in that section and choose another available model. This changes the default for automatically detected writing tasks.

  3. Click New chat in the sidebar. Keep Model: auto below the chat box and send this request:

Write a brief email proposing a 20-minute project catch-up next Tuesday.

Check the model named with the response.

  4. To choose manually, click the model selection below the chat box. Choose All models, scroll to a provider heading, and click an available model underneath it. This chat selection does not change the task default.

  5. Return to Settings → Models and restore the previous writing default if this was only a test.

Exclude available providers

  1. In Models, find Exclude providers.
  2. Review Exclude OpenAI, Exclude xAI Grok, and Exclude Claude Fable. Activate only an exclusion you actually want, or leave them unchanged for this exercise.
  3. Reopen the chat model selection to see which choices remain available. Workspace exclusions can also restrict your choices and cannot be overridden here.

These are the offered exclusions, not a general switch for hiding any individual model. An unavailable model can also reflect your plan, context size, or a usage limit. Read the explanation shown rather than assuming it has been excluded.

Check your result

You know the difference between a task default, a chat selection, and a project default, and where the supported exclusions live.
